Living in Currumbin Ecovillage

Kangaroos hop past the kitchen windows of Currumbin Ecovillage that was named World's Best Environmental Development in June.

The village on Queensland's Gold Coast in Australia received the award from the prestigious International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) in Amsterdam.

It's an exciting time for the far sighted developers and residents of the village who are working to help show the way towards sensible sustainable housing for the future.

The village is but a spit away from my home and it's where my daughter Lynne and her husband John have chosen to build their rammed earth home.

The lovely house with its central rock garden is almost at lock-up now so they hope to be moving in within a couple of months.

I've written an extensive post about the village, with many pictures, in my blog Journeys in Creative Writing. How about having a look?

Currumbin Ecovillage is being built in quite an area - the site is indicated by the arrow below:

  1. June, It is so beautiful there where you are. I am going over to visit the other site now. I love their house! Can't imagine looking out and seeing a kangeroo though! WOW.

  2. Thanks for letting me know that you liked the Ecovillage post Judy and pleased you went over to Journeys in Creative Writing for more detail.
The kangaroo families are lovely, although everyone has to be a bit careful of the Dad as big kangaroos can actually box!
I've just noticed you have added your pic as one of my followers. Thank you so much. If you put Following on your post I'll certainly declare that I follow your Living on the Other Side of the Hill.
You Kate and I look like the three wise monkeys!
    Cheers

  3. I can't get the "following" thingy yet. I tried and it said it is still in the experimental stage and not available to everyone. Guess you are one of the experimental people. I certainly will add it as soon as I have the opportunity. Thanks, June

  4. The time will come Judy. I think it's a good idea ...
I think it looks pretty rough on the site but apparently they're going to re-design that.
    Happy Day

  5. Hi June, You've just been tagged, they are questions I was asked by grumpyoldwoman and were on my blog today.
I have asked them of you in tomorrows blog which I have just put on schedule in the post system. Cheers, Kate x.
I'll probably not post again until we get back from Blackpool in a week, so cheers for now !

  6. G'day again Kate
Have fun in Blackpool - and I hope the fish and chips are better than the ones I had there in 1981! Soggy!
I'll look for the tag ..
By the way the follower thingy as Judy calls it - I think you should have something of your own on top on your site - not my 70 Plus and Still Kicking address. Nice sentiment though ...
    Cheers

  7. Hi again June, Thanks for drawing attention to my slip - I've now renamed me 'thingy' as Judy calls it hehe ... Oh and by the way June the fish and chips in Blackpool are bloody woeful in most foodie places, I know ! tried them the first times we went .... but we found a decent fish and chip place since then . We go a couple of times a year.

The best place to get a fish and chippy is Harry Ramsden's place at The Quay in Glasgow. Every other one we have tried (and we have tried a 'lot') have been awful - as you said...

I think I found the answer to my query of why few folk like anchovies... are you a smoker ? It was up until 7 years ago and it was the strong taste that I found really appetizing... Although not a smoker now I still yearn for both ciggies and the taste of anchovies remind me of my smoking days... I don't think I'll ever not miss smoking - not so much the actual taste but the physical act of smoking - my hands still don't know what to do with themselves....I would love to be able to just have a couple of ciggies then stop - but unfortunately if I light up I'll be hooked again, "Bloody Weed" anyway, better get organized. I will just call in every now and again to the site till tonight - me nose will bother me too much not to ! Cheers for now Kate x.

  8. Can't help you with your ciggy theory Kate - I'm a non-smoker and always have been. Asthmatic!
Don't fall off the pier at Blackpool ...

  9. Hi again June, well that theory was knocked into a cocked hat wasn't it ? My sister Dorien (my twin for spare parts)- the one who had Lymphoma, is asthmatic too, she wasn't before the cancer but became it afterwards... weird she had smoked all through the 'c' treatment and everything... you should have seen her bending over the wash hand basin puffing away on a ciggie - and blowing the smoke down the plughole - at least she tried to ... you see this was when she was nutropoenic (think that's how you spell it). She was sealed from germs and yet here she was continuing to swallow filthy smoke - we had to scrub up before entering her room and the windows were sealed and everything and we had to wear aprons too.. and yet here she was puffing away merrily... Mad ! and yet 7 years ago she just decided to stop smoking and then I did too... we could both have saved a fortune and done our health good years before... crazy crazy.... Oops better move my butt! still haven't finished the packing yet. Cheers..

  10. Hi Kate
Your poor sister. No wonder you both stopped smoking in the end.
Now - go to Blackpool, you little computer nerd you!
I'll get around to the tag later today with any luck ... and another post or two. We have local government elections so I must vote as well. Gotta keep the developers out!
    Cheers
